Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical Christian housing ministry
that seeks to eliminate poverty housing from the world and to make
decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Linda and Millard
Fuller founded Habitat for Humanity in 1976. For more information,
please visit Winchester-Frederick
Co, Habitat for Humanity.
Lebanon-Clary Quilters
The Lebanon Quilters began as a group sponsored by the LCW in 1979.
That year 14 women met monthly and made 7 quilts and 35 lap robes.
Among these early women we recall the names of Margie Brill, Clara
Campbell, Mozelle Hockman, and Lucky Hockman. Later on we recall
others joining the group - Mary Miller, Cindy Henry, Ruth Ann Hockman,
and Nina Chappell. When ladies from surrounding communities began
joining them, they became the Lebanon-Clary Community Quilters. They
made queen size, regular and small quilts, lap robes, bibs and stuffed
animals. At a glance their sessions took on a look of a manufacturing
plant as the various groups went into action-cutters, designers,
stitchers (using sewing machines), pressers, and finally the knotters.
Mozelle Hockman donated several quilt tops. Others donated material
and other supplies. Finished products were donated to the elderly,
Lutheran War Relief, local nursing homes, the Shenandoah County Farm,
fire victims and the Children's Ward at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital.
The girls from Floe Wilderness School in Warren County made a visit
to learn the craft.
The Quilters continue to stitch beautiful quilts and lap robes for persons in nursing homes and hospitals each year. The season always ends with a covered dish meal
at noon with games, Bingo and lots of fellowship. They continue to be
active and expect to continue for many years. Their slogan is "QUILTERS
KEEP YOU IN STITCHES." For more information, contact Dorothy
Heishman at 465-8698.

Shenandoah Alliance for Shelter
Shenandoah
Alliance for Shelter was created as a result of several
meetings in 1989 attended by about 25 to 30 representatives of the
community including concerned citizens, ministers, DSS caseworkers,
Salvation Army, Sheriff's Department, church outreach groups, Habitat
for Humanity, and Blue Ridge Legal Services. The concern was that
there was no mechanism in this County to assist homeless families
while keeping the family together as a unit.
Since January 1990, hundreds of families have been served by the
Prevention Program. The Transitional Housing Program has also served
many County residents, providing thousands of nights of shelter since
its inception.

Volunteer Farm
The number of residents seeking help from food
banks is growing, but donations are steadily dropping according
to officials with the Volunteer
Farm of Woodstock. "It appears from some indicators
that the number of hungry people may be in the process of increasing
by about 25 percent," said Bob Blair, chairman and CEO of the
World Foundation for Children and sponsor for Volunteer Farm. Blair
said. "The big increase [in people seeking help] in large part
is caused by the economy. There seems to be a large number of people
in the housing industry that have been put out of work." About
one in eight people in Virginia are considered "food insecure," with
nearly 40 percent of them being children, Blair said. The 65-acre
Volunteer Farm in Woodstock donates fresh vegetables to the Blue
Ridge Area Food Bank Network, which serves 25 counties and nine
cities in the state, including Winchester and the counties of Shenandoah,
Warren, Frederick and Clarke.
